Trust welcomes first new Nurse Associates

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust are welcoming a new role into their nursing team. Seven new nursing associates - a new national role that will open up a career in nursing to people from all backgrounds are joining Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (BWC).

They have successfully completed a two-year academic and clinical training programme that has involved working on placements in different healthcare settings across Birmingham. As part of the programme, the nursing associates attended university and have obtained a foundation degree, which they could use as an alternative route into BSc nursing to become registered nurses.

The Nursing Associate role bridges the gap between healthcare assistants and registered qualified nurses. They will work alongside and support nurses to make sure that patients get the best and safest quality care possible.

The programme has given Nursing Associate, Michelle from Birmingham a new found confidence as well as better career prospects. She said: “I have found the programme very interesting and rewarding and the skills I have learnt from the placements have been invaluable. Although it’s hard work, I have been fully supported by the clinical nurse educators and the teams who I have been working with.  The thing that I have noticed about myself is not only do I have more clinical knowledge but my confidence has grown.  I would love to go onto train to be a qualified nurse but in the meantime I am excited about making a difference to children and their families.”

Helen Watson, Associate Director of Nursing said: “We are thrilled to welcome our new Nursing Associates as they embark on their new careers in nursing and begin their new roles supporting the patients and staff on our wards. They truly embody the values of our Trust, ambitious, brave and compassionate and we couldn’t be more proud to have been a part of their journey.”

The new Nursing Associates will be enrolled on the Nursing and Midwifery Councils register and will work across wards and departments at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Birmingham Women’s Hospital.
