Prestigious city award for leading NHS Chief Executive

The Chief Executive of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust Sarah-Jane Marsh, has been presented with a prestigious award from the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.

Announced during their 2017 ceremony, Sarah-Jane was given the ‘President’s Award’ for her strong leadership through the integration of Birmingham Women’s and Birmingham Children’s Hospitals and for the recent Children’s Hospital’s ‘Outstanding’ Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating.

Upon appointed to the Children’s Hospital Chief Executive role in March 2009, Sarah-Jane – aged just 32 – was the youngest ever NHS Chief Executive. In July 2015, with plans developing to work towards integration, Sarah-Jane  became the joint Chief Executive of both the Children’s and Women’s Hospitals.

During her eight years as Children’s Hospital Chief Executive,  Sarah-Jane has led the development of the city’s innovative new mental health partnership for 0 to 25 year olds, Forward Thinking Birmingham – the first of its type in the NHS. More recently, she was appointed Chair of the NHS England Maternity Transformation Programme Board, which aims to make maternity care across England safer and give women greater control and more choice.

Paul Kehoe, President of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce who presented the award, said:

“Sarah-Jane and her staff have done a remarkable job at a truly remarkable Birmingham institution. They play a vital role in the delivery of great care every day and they have all helped to get the hospital where it is today. Birmingham should be proud of this marvellous asset and I am delighted to give this special award to this special lady.

“Birmingham Children’s Hospital is the first hospital of its kind to receive ‘Outstanding’ status and the award came just as it was opening Magnolia House, which in itself is testimony to how Birmingham can pull together to achieve great results.”

Magnolia House is a new £1 million support centre which has been hailed as setting the benchmark for palliative and bereavement care across the country. It has been funded entirely by charitable donations and will improve the experiences of hundreds of families who receive life-changing or difficult news in the future.
